- Dhamra is one of the most ancient ports of India. Till about independence and even thereafter it was used for cargo transportation between North Orissa and Kolkata.
- Officially, the Dhamra port limits were notified as far back as 1931.
- Dhamra continued to be a thriving port till after independence when it fell to disuse except as a fishing port.
- Government of Orissa (GoO) decides to develop it as a modern port.
- GoO decided to develop it into a modern deep port following a pre-feasibility study by RITES.
- The Government chose the PPP mode on BOOST basis
